LAMBDA DISK LAYOUTS (SINGLE 515MB) This table illustrates a range of possible disk layouts for Lambda models with a single 515Mb disk. The CDC-515 disk provides, after required partitions and formatting, about 438Mb. Typical disk requirements are given first for a system "optimized" for run-time performance, and second, where performance has been traded down for file-system space. Loading the LISP sources is optional, but many customers prefer to have them available for perusal of example code, learning about functionality, diagnosing problems, etc. Smaller amounts of space for LISP SOURCES may be required in some instances, e.g., for using the OnLine Documentation Manager, WindowMaker, and other optional modules. SUMMARY ------- On most Lambda configurations, a single disk drive will accomodate both optimal performance requirements as well as large file systems and an adequate number of LISP worlds. When configuring a Lambda, care must be taken to accomodate future expansion if, for example, applications or development projects will require much larger file spaces. Since a second disk-drive can only be added to a heavy-duty chassis, the heavy-duty option should be considered carefully. For example, some customers have one dual-disk system which acts as a large file server for other, single-disk Lambdas. The single-disk Lambda 2x2-Plus is a very tight configuration which cannot accomodate both large address space (for performance) and large file-system space (for development ease). The performance layout has no room for the 4th load band most customers require for ease of system management, and no room for the LISP sources at all.
