MEMORANDUM TO: Wendy Rowe FROM: Keith Corbett DATE: October 7, 1986 SUBJ: Laser1+ Problems COPY: John Salis, Alan Wilson, Ron Genest, Bruce Deffenbaugh I was out last Thursday when the ECO came up on adding Laser1+ software installation instructions to the BOM for the Laser1+ printer. If the proposed ECO is to be effective, it should address the issue of creating a Laser1+ BOM as well as the inclusion of installation notes. Manufacturing stopped shipping Laser1+ upgrades some time ago. They have shipped several complete Laser1+ printers, and none of them included the four page software installation note. Each shipment has been assembled by hand, with no procedure from Engineering. Every installation has caused a problem in the field; we have had to read the instructions over the telephone. There is a master for the installation notes in Manufacturing, and it is called out in the upgrade kit BOM. But apparently there is no BOM for the Laser1+ printer (as distinct from the Laser1). The document and tape make up an entire optional LMI product. I don't believe the document makes reference to Laser1+ upgrades per se; it simply explains that a software upgrade is necessary to drive a Laser1+ printer. At least my original draft of that document was deliberately worded that way. So all we really need right now is an ECO to create a BOM for the Laser1+ printer package which includes the tape and document option. In addition, for Release 3.0 support of Laser1+ we need: - A master tape with a Laser1+ driver for 3.0 (new rev!); this must show up in (print-herald) as a separate patched system (since it is a separate option, and Tiger patches are under system-revision-level). - Release/installation notes for the 3.0 software (new rev!) - An ECO to revise the Laser1+ software kit (new rev!), and one to revise the Laser1+ BOM that brings in the new 3.0 Laser1+ software kit. The new document should be a trivial rewrite of the old. This kit must be sent as an update to all Laser1+ customers after 3.0 is released. I hope we can anticipate these needs in time to prevent any further confusion. KMC
